Cane Hill Hospital (Surrey County Asylum), Coulsdon
Our initial destination was the nearby Coulsdon Deep Shelter, but after giving this our best shot, we discovered it was sealed for now, and headed up the hill to see what was still standing of the infamous Cane Hill Hospital. This place was once a 'holy grail' as far as asylums go, and was absolutely massive. I am seriously gutted that I never got to see this place when it was all fully standing, but hey, life's not always fair.
The only structures still standing are the water tower, the chapel, and the administration building (just). One thing people think about when this place is mentioned, is the tragic fire which occurred here in 2010, destroying half of the administration block, including the felling of the clock tower. The evidence of this is all still there, hence the scaffolding which is currently there holding up half of the structure. |
